The new residence in the Kalogeros area of Serifos island is designed with a core principle of respecting the landscape, situated in a sparsely developed region. Taking advantage of the sloping terrain, the residence is divided into two underground volumes constructed with uncoated stone masonry, blending seamlessly into the natural surroundings. A distinctive part of the residence, the living room, is detached from the main structure and placed centrally to ensure uninterrupted views from two sides. This volume, also made of uncoated stone masonry, features a planted roof, maintaining its harmonious integration with the landscape while defining the shared veranda of the house.
The underground sections of the residence include the main entrance, the kitchen with a dining area, one master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, three additional bedrooms with private bathrooms, and auxiliary spaces such as a WC, linen closet, and storage. A glass corridor – the “neck” – connects the underground section to the living room, emphasizing the entry axis towards the view. On one side of this corridor, a small garden inspired by Japanese Zen gardens has been designed, while on the other side lies the outdoor area with seating and dining spaces, shaded by a pergola. This area has also been planned to accommodate a swimming pool in the future, subject to legal approvals.
The architectural approach is based on materials that harmonize with the natural environment. Externally, the volumes of the residence are constructed with unplastered stonework, while internally, beige-colored plaster predominates, except in the living room, where the stonework continues on the interior walls. The floors, both indoors and outdoors, are covered with orthogonal stone, while the ceilings feature orthogonal wooden beams along both axes, creating a grid. Between the beams, the remaining ceiling surface is plastered in the same color as the walls, except in the living room, where straw matting is used instead of plaster. The metal lintels of the openings and the main structure of the pergola have a rust-colored finish, referencing the historical mines of Serifos. The pergola’s covering consists of wooden beams, aligned with the pattern of the interior ceiling woodwork to ensure a natural continuity between the interior and exterior spaces, as well as cane.
The design of the residence aims to enhance the sense of tranquility and mental rejuvenation inspired by the site, with its panoramic views, minimal development, and profound serenity.
